Family Plan FAQ
A Tolan Family Plan Membership can work two ways: a parent or guardian sharing it with a child, or two or more adults — partners, siblings, roommates, any adult family member — sharing it with each other. This FAQ covers what both groups should know, including how Tolan's experience lines up with new state laws regulating AI companion apps for minors.
The Basics
What is the Tolan Family Plan?
It's a membership that can be shared between people giving members shared billing, individual Tolans per member, and/or usage controls alongside the core Tolan experience.
Who can I share a Family Plan with?
A parent or guardian can share a plan with a child, or adults can share a plan with each other — no parent-child relationship required. Children under 13 years of age may use Tolan with parental consent.
If I share my plan with another adult, is their experience different from mine?
No. The safety protections described below are specific to minors. Two adults sharing a Family Plan each get the standard Tolan experience — nothing about content, disclosures, or interaction style changes just because the membership is shared rather than individual.
Is the experience different for minors?
Yes. Several state laws require a different, more restrictive experience for minors — things like more frequent reminders that they're talking to AI, and hard limits on certain types of conversations.
Minor Safety
Does Tolan make clear it's AI, not a real person?
Yes, Tolan clearly discloses it is AI (not a human) for every user. Users receive a reminder periodically during long conversations to take a break, and minors receive a reminder hourly.
What happens if a minor on my family plan mentions dangerous behavior?
Tolan has protocols that detect this kind of content and respond by pointing the user to crisis resources (like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) rather than engaging with or generating harmful content. A parent or guardian will receive an in-app notification if/when the app detects this behavior from their child's usage.
Can Tolan have romantic or sexual conversations with a member who's a minor?
No. This is explicitly barred for all users.
How does Tolan know which members on a plan are minors?
When creating an account, all users are asked to enter their birthdate. Users adding others to a Family Plan will verify the birthdate when sending/accepting an invitation to the Family Plan.
Privacy
What data does Tolan collect from conversations?
Per Tolan's Privacy Policy, conversations are logged to power each member's Tolan's memory of past chats, stored securely, and never sold or shared without consent. This applies the same way whether you're on an individual or Family Plan. Parents have the option to request that their teen's data is deleted.
Can a member's account and data be deleted?
Yes. Account deletion is available in-app (Profile → Settings → Delete Account), or by emailing support@tolans.com.
